Why FDA-Approved Marijuana Drug Medication First Time In The US

Although Drugs usage has always been illegal in our country, it is still used only when it is utilized for medicinal purposes so that it benefits the people. It is the first time in the US than in June 2007, Epidiolex, a Marijuana-based drug is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of seizures in the two diseases called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. These diseases are likely to occur in two-year-old children or in early childhood.

Epidiolex is an oral drug that is recommended twice a day and is now even sold off-label in about 50 pharmacies of the state. CBD is an element of the Cannabis sativa plant that is more commonly known as Marijuana. However it does not causes intoxication or the “High feeling”; it is another element tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that is the dangerous component.

Dravet syndrome is a dysfunction of the brain that occurs in the first year of life while Lennox-Gastaut syndrome is a form of epilepsy with multiple seizures commonly spotted between children aged 3-5. Both the patients of these diseases did not respond well to the previous medications. The FBA advisory suggested an investigation on Epidiolex that is derived from marijuana for the treatment. When this was tested among people who didn’t have these diseases it helped concluding that it was more effective in reducing the seizures frequency. Therefore it is not a perfect cure but an effective measure that could help people having seizure-related problems. Considering the benefits of this CBD the FDA gave permission for this drug to be used due to its medical potential and hopes that the product developers will be able to secure it in a more beneficial way so that it gives out the maximum benefit to the people.

This Drug that was previously banned in the state is now available on shelves primarily for the patients with the Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Common side effects of this drug include lethargy, sedation, decrease in appetite, diarrhea, weakness, insomnia and other infections.

It should be given under medicinal guidance with properly followed schedules and important information about the drug’s risks and usage. It can have serious side effects too such as negative feelings about attempting suicide, injuring self, having panic attacks or depression. Therefore it is recommended to be used only on doctor’s prescription and avoid overdosage.

The FDA believes that the dramatic improvement of patients through the use of this drug is going to benefit humanity and also that it opens a platform for the exploration of marijuana elements for scientific research and utilization in medical field. Also now that it is sold off-label, it is calculated that doctors will start prescribing this drug more regularly for other diseases and then the effects will be seen later on in life. The FDA is doing its best to do its job taking care of public health, keeping it safe from harmful drugs and securing a healthy life.
